Kaaprisi – Traditional Sweet for Baby Naming Ceremony (Punyavachanam)
Kaaprisi is a treasured South Indian sweet made specially during the Punyavachanam or naming ceremony of a newborn child. Rooted deeply in Iyer and Iyengar traditions, this sacred sweet is lovingly prepared on the 11th day after the baby is born, and offered to women guests as part of the haldi kumkum (vettalapakku) return gift.
Prepared using red rice or white rice, pottu kadalai, and jaggery, Kaaprisi is a wholesome, mildly sweet and crunchy mixture that reflects purity, nourishment, and the warmth of family blessings. Its simplicity and spiritual value make it an essential part of the postpartum rituals performed at home.
